Triangulation pillars are those 4ft concrete pillars you may have noticed on top of some hills. They were constructed between about 1930 and 1960 and used to hold a device that helped surveyors map the country. There are, or were, over 6000 such pillars. The pastime involves visiting as many as you can with the advantage being that there is generally a good view when you get there. Its another hobby that satisfies my desire to visit different places all the time! The very accurate map references are available on a web site which are them plugged into your GPS which should take you straight there! Once found you can go back to the web site and log your visit and recount your experiences! Look me us – I’m Father Ted on http://www.trigpointinguk.com/
Some trig point have even been moved from their original position such as TP6044 Snowford Trig Point
There was a time when I made it into the top ten in the list of trigpoints visited but in November 2010 I am languishing down in 15th position. That's out of 1600 or more registered users so I suppose that's not bad.
