Geocaching

For Christmas 2003 I got a little hand-held GPS device.  It was mainly bought with the intention of giving myself more confidence to go off  hill walking on my own. Someone however mentioned to me about the sport of geocaching from then on I was hooked!

Out geocaching in Midland, Michigan in November 2010

This is fast becoming a very popular sport around the world.  Again it is a glorified treasure hunt using a GPS.  People hide boxes (caches) of various sizes containing a log book and exchange items.  The caches are generally hidden in interesting places and again encourage you to visit places you wouldn’t normally.  You get the co-ordinates off the Internet, plug them into your GPS and go searching, enjoying the countryside as you do it.  Once you have found the cache you sign the log book, exchange an item if you wish and go home and log your find on the web site.  Caches vary in difficulty to find and terrain you may have to cross. Sometimes you may find a Travel Bug in a cache.  These are not exchange items but rather items to be taken and dropped off at anther cache. Its one of the only pastimes I do that I can get my boys keen on!  Look me up or look for a geocache near you – there thousands of then around.  I’m Superted on www.geocaching.com
